Potassium Sorbate

Potassium Sorbate is a very potent inhibitor of bacteria, yeast and mold. It is widely used to prevent microbial buildup in both systemic glycerine preserving solutions and cut flower holding solutions. It is generally used at the rate of 4 grams per gallon (1 gram per liter). Potassium Sorbate requires an acidifier and is used in conjunction with citric acid.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is used to control the pH of floral preservatives and holding solutions. Better protection against bacteria formation is achieved by lowering the pH of floral solutions. A pH of 3.5 is recommended for most cut flowers. Citric acid is generally used at the rate of 1-2 grams per gallon. One pound of citric acid treats approximately 200 gallons.
