Pigment

Standard Pigments

There are two classes of colorants: dyes and pigments. Pigments offer some advantages over dyes, such as better opacity (hiding power) and better lightfastness. In addition, materials colored with pigments are less prone to bleeding than dyed products.

Koch Color pigments are designed for use with water-based systems. They are excellent for use in floral and craft applications. Pigments must be mixed with water and an adhesive binder to produce paints that can be applied by spray, immersion or brush. As a binder we offer our Adhesive Binder 309 for fresh flowers and Adhesive Binder 861T for dried flowers. When coating waxy surfaces, we also recommend our Pre-Treatment Additive, Paint Prep 9L (see pricing below).

Metallic Pigment

Our Silver and Gold metallic pigments are 99.9% pure with excellent covering capacity. They are designed for use with water-based systems. This eliminates the need for hazardous solvents and thinners. They are excellent for use in floral and craft applications. Fine particle size provides uniform coverage. Our metallic pigments come in paste form eliminating the dust associated with dry powder forms. They are mixed with water and an adhesive binder to produce metallic paints that can be applied by spray, immersion or brush. As a binder we offer our Adhesive Binder 309 for fresh flowers and Adhesive Binder 861T for dried flowers. When coating waxy surfaces, we also recommend our Pre-Treatment Additive, Paint Prep 9L (see pricing below).

Important Note: Metallic Pigments are ordered seasonally. For large orders (55 lbs or more), we ask that you place your order before July 1 to ensure you receive your complete order in a timely manner.

Adhesive Binder

Adhesives 309 and 861T are specialty glues used to hold standard and metallic pigments and glitter onto the surface of floral products being coated. They are sold in concentrated form. The normal dilution rate is 1 part binder mixed with 3-5 parts water. Adhesive 309 is specially formulated for use with most fresh flowers and foliage. Adhesive 861T is intended for use with dried and preserved materials.

Pre-Treatment Additive

In some cases, where the surface is waxy, adhesion of pigments can be difficult. By removing surface waxes before coating, results can be improved. We offer a pre-treatment product called Paint Prep 9L. This product contains ingredients that break down surface waxes. It is a concentrated product that is added to water at the rate of 2-4 fluid ounces per gallon. Foliage is first soaked in this mixture for a short period of time, then rinsed prior to coating.
